Culture of Fear

This is less of a G20 meeting agenda item than an overarching theme: the Canadian government has worked to create a climate of fear around the G20 summit.

The multi-layers of fencing separating the G20 leaders from the inhabitants, the billion plus dollars spent on security, as well as the long list of prohibited items and canceled events are all symbolic of the insider and outsider reality that marks the global economy. We become either enforcers or victims, actors or spectators, powerful or powerless.

While the G20 fence is temporary and certainly much less debilitating to people’s daily lives, symbolically it is no different that the wall in Palestine, or the border between Mexico and the U.S.  The fence is a symbol of the multiple walls and borders that have been built and enforced as the fallout of G20 neoliberal policies displaces populations.
